PROVEN WRONG & LOST £5 TO SEND CHILD TO HUCKLOW

It all started about two months ago. Being interested in my Surname which is Craven. The only three connections of the word were Firstly an area near Skipton was always known as Craven. The other side of the family was the Earl of Craven somewhere in the midlands and finally the adjective Craven means cowardly. Two month ago John & Celia Midgley suggested that another meaning of the word was to do with Ramsons or Wild Garlic. I was very sceptical and suggested a wager. If they could find proof of what they were saying, I would give them £5 to the Charity of their choice. If they could not prove it I was to give them £5 to the charity of their choice. I was pretty sure of winning because I had looked at all the dictionaries both at home & in Brighouse Library & done a thorough search of the Internet. However Celia & John gained their information from another source.
I will write it for you just as it come from the pages of a notice in Skipton Castle. Welcome to Craven. Craven has existed throughout recorded history, but it's boundaries have changed over time. Since 1974 Craven has been the name of a Local Government district.. However at various points in the past, all the areas (Including towns in West Yorkshire and Lancashire) have been considered to be part of Craven.
In around 991 AD the anglo saxons further divided Craven into three Wapentakes - or administrative meeting places - called East Staincliffe, West Staincliffe and Ewecross. By the time of the domesday book of 1086 however these Wapentakes were not used and instead just refer to the area as Craven. It is not really known where Craven gets it's name. It is suggested that it may be connected to the Welsh word Craf , meaning Garlic as a lot of wild Garlic grows in the area. After the Service at Pepper Hill today 7 of us went to the Brighouse Wetherspoons for lunch. It had been sort of half arranged that Rev. Ernest Baker after having taken the Pulpit at Bradford Unitarians, & taken part in collaboration with Bradford Quakers in a tree planting Ceremony would meet us there firstly to receive our copy of the Creationism: Design Errors and cross purposes by Graham Richards, and secondly to receive the £5 as a donation to his Charity "Senda child to Hucklow". In the event he was unable to make it so Celia & John are keeping the £5 until the next time they meet him. and I am stuck for another few months with the Graham Richards book.
